If you are thinking of becoming a model, you need to consider in which branch of the industry you want to excel. As most people know there is a world of difference between a glamour, a catwalk and a catalogue model. Let’s be honest if it’s a career on Page 3 of a daily newspaper, or in Nuts or the other “lads mags” the chances are you will have the attributes necessary to carry this off. People have very differing views on this kind of work, but if you have the looks and you are comfortable doing it, then go for it. You only have to look at Katie Price, to see the sort of opportunities that can become available to you if you are successful. There is a limited lifespan for taking your clothes off in the glossies, so look for other paths you can follow as age and gravity catches up with you.
There is no reason why you could not make the leap from topless to fashion and catalogue work. It is just a question of putting more clothes on than taking them off! You may progress from semi naked, to swimwear, then clothes, and who knows, wooly cardigans when you are in your sixties.
This is a valid point to consider. Fashion models come in all shapes and sizes and all ages from two to ninety two. Remember somebody has to model clothes for the size 20-22 as well as zero. You do not need to feel that you cannot become a model, you can. If you are determined and want it, then you need to make it happen. You may recall the new Dove campaign that started a few years ago. They deliberately chose ‘ordinary’ looking women who were differing shapes etc. Similarly, the mail order catalogues are trying to sell to the man and woman in the street, so they deliberately look for average looking models.
Lastly, we have the catwalk mannequins, perhaps the hardest category to break into. That said, the rewards both financial and in lifestyle are perhaps the greatest. There is the ‘reality’ route into this sector. This means entering Next Top Model (now made in many countries). It’s not only the winner who ends up with a worthwhile career. The point is to get to the top in this particular industry you need exposure and that is what the tv programme affords you. Whichever route you decide to take, you too can become a model.
